Whenever I come to the stage of talking with my students about visual communication and the presentational aspect of fashion, I usually start with a slideshow, as an intro to our discussion, presenting few great examples of editorials, campaigns etc. For over a decade, I am sharing the amazing Vogue US editorial “Beauty and the Beast” by Annie Leibovitz, starring Drew Barrymore (April 2005 issue).
What I like in this photo series, apart from the well known photographic genius of Leibovitz, is carefully translated story in a visual medium (retaining its autonomy and in the same time serving the purpose of presenting clothing), highly elaborated sets with many historical references (i.e. great visual culture), remarkable compositions in terms of building the visual aspects of the images and the storytelling etc. The editorial presents haute couture gowns by Dior, Chanel and Christian Lacroix. Enjoy the inspiring photo story.
